Superhuman Powers: Surge is a mutant with the ability to absorb electricity from the air or from appliances and devices. This electricity builds in her body and causes her mind to race. It either be channeled into her speed, making her a very fast speedster, or it can be discharged in offensive bursts. Her power gauntlets allow her to regulate intake and release, which minimizes her problems with her ability. It is unclear if she will ever gain enough control naturally to be able to remove them.

Abilities: Surge is a native Japanese speaker who speaks English fluently, with little traces of an accent.

History: Noriko ran way from home when her mutation developed and her father loudly proclaimed that he "didn't believe in muants." She came to America and lived on the streets using prescription drugs to help control the rate at which her body absorbed electricity. When her body was overloaded she would talk at an increased speed, more quickly and have trouble ordering her thoughts. The only way to combat this was to discharge the electricity in large dangerous bursts. Noriko tried to find help at Xavier's but was turned away by Hellion, who thought she was some homeless girl. When Elixir saw her on the street one day in town, he organized his teammates to go looking for her and help her out. She was again overloaded on electricity, but by using Wallflower's pheremones, they calmed her down enough to bring her to the school. Beast made a pair of gauntlets for Noriko to wear that would control her electrical intake and discharge. Prodigy quickly befriended her, despite Nori's gruff exterior.

When a ghost was haunting the school, Noriko was the one who finally got through his angry facade and helped him make peace with his death.Missing her own brother back in Tokyo, she adopted a big sister role and took Jeffrey Garrett under her wing.

Noriko has had problems with teammate Prodigy since her arrival, with her rebellious nature clashing with his by-the-book thinking and occasionally judgemental attitudes. But despite this, he is the one she is closest to on her squad. When he recently saw a vision of his future that included a tragic romance between them, he responded by shutting Noriko out of his life, and she has been hurt enough by this to realize she has feelings for him.
